The Value of a Sparrow (Student Post)

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt lonely or unnoticed? In Matthew 10:29-31, Jesus told his disciples, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” This is an important and applicable passage that is extremely helpful in many situations.

First of all, if one is feeling down, this is a comforting passage that reminds us of God’s love and care for all creation. He takes care of the smallest creatures and He takes even greater  care of us. Many times it is easy to fall into the trap of forgetting how much God loves us. However, this passage demonstrates how God values all living things, from the sparrows to us. It also shows how God holds human beings as uniquely set apart and favored, a truth reinforced in Genesis 1:26-28, “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’  So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”

Jesus also tells us in Matthew 10 that God knows how many hairs are on each one of the 8.1 billion heads in our world. The fact that God designed and understands us in such detail shows how He is both omniscient and loving. He doesn’t forget about us. So, the next time you need reassuring, remember the tiny sparrow and how much more God cherishes you.
